The client is one of the largest retail corporations in the United States, operating supermarkets and multi-department stores at national scale. With thousands of store locations and a complex web of business applications dependent on operational data, the organization required a highly reliable, scalable data platform to support enterprise-wide analytics, reporting, and day-to-day decision-making.
The client ran multiple business-critical applications on distributed on-premise databases, namely PostgreSQL and Cassandra, spread across systems with no centralized governance or lineage. As data volumes grew and analytics demands increased, the architecture created mounting operational risk: fragmented data, high infrastructure overhead, and limited visibility across the enterprise. The client needed to modernize without taking any application offline. Kanerika designed and executed a phased migration to Databricks, keeping legacy and cloud systems running in parallel until every application was fully validated and cut over.



All data from distributed on-premise systems consolidated into a single, governed cloud platform, giving business users and downstream applications consistent, reliable access for the first time.
Legacy hardware, backup systems, and on-premise maintenance overhead fully retired, reducing operational complexity and freeing IT capacity for strategic work.
Unity Catalog enabled role-based access control, centralized authentication, data lineage tracking, and standardized governance across all workspaces and user groups.
Databricks’ distributed processing architecture gave the organization a platform capable of handling large datasets, concurrent workloads, and future AI and analytics expansion without re-engineering.
Phased execution with parallel system availability meant the business never experienced downtime. Each application was validated before cutover and legacy systems were decommissioned only after full confirmation.
